Course Description:
English III is a core class required for graduation. Prerequisites for this course are successful completion of English 1 and English 2. English 3 is an introduction to American literature through the study of the works of modern American authors with reference sections for grammar and composition. However, it may include works by some authors from outside the U.S. It includes literary analysis, understanding of the elements of fiction with an emphasis on active reading and the ability to write responses to selected readings. The class introduces students to a variety of authors from around the world, but primarily focuses on modern American literature. The main writing component of the class is the strengthening of literary analysis through lessons on the elements of fiction. Students are asked to respond in a variety of forms, including formal literary analysis, and creative writing and expression.
